Capacity building for AAA

It’s that time again. Shaking the tree to get action happening.

It’s 50 plus hours since I opened the programme to get some young minds engaging with being a citizen of the planet. And not a lot of action yet.

How does the world relate to each of us?
Do we take the world we inhabit as a given?
Something for others to shape?
Why don’t we ‘feel’ for the others?
Why do we live in a selfish lite world?
Who is at fault?
Why do we produce such minds that feel inhibited, small and inconsequential?
Where is the impatience if youth?
Why do the youth resemble the elderly?

Us this what the world has become- a retirement village?
I am ok, you are not okay?

Is life food, shopping and work?
Is life about being happy? Even if it is a shallow meaningless life?
An amusement park life?

Is this the good life?
Is it all about maintains a good life?

Isn’t this all – this kind of ‘pet’ life- spectacularly boring?

words@bld.50: Saying no to the prima dona | Soumitri Varadarajan| Thursday 5 April 2012

Some time back I spoke at a pubic event – this is the blurb and link to that event.

It was 1994. I take up an academic position.

I declare that from that point on I would not design products.

(How does one continue as an Industrial Designer without designing objects?)

I rationalised that Brundtland had a fundamental flaw and was speaking only to the designers of objects. I have since disagreed with the fundamental position that there is any point in ecodesign or in making objects more sustainable. (In Portugal in 2000 I said Ecodesign was dead). There is no point in the cultural project of sustainable consumption.

It is possible to say no to consumption. There are more worthwhile causes and more meaningful projects for design people to engage in than the indulgence in the joy of refashioning artefacts for human consumption.

I have not designed an ‘object’ since 1994. I have no use for the black shirt!

Thursday 5 April. start. Gold coin donation

RMIT building 50, Orr Street, Carlton. (Off Victoria Street between Lygon and Cardigan Sts.)

Formally known as the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), the Brundtland Commission’s mission is to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together.

Locavore Edition Easter – reconnecting producers and consumers.

Still going the ‘local’ movement.

First off, a huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Foodpreneurs event at Fed Square as part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. We saw you scrawling ideas in notebooks and can only imagine the food startups that are bubbling away in your minds. The event wouldn’t have been what it was without the insights of our speakers and the hard yakka of our volunteers, so thanks to you all too. If you have any feedback about the event, drop us a line at so we can start planning the next one!

We’ve got some long weekend reading from you from around the country. A farmer puts in his two cents about Meat Free Week, a dairy springs back to life by claiming ownership over the processing process and the NSW food bowl is showcasing its best. Stonefruit growers offer insider knowledge of the Riverina and we uncover the greatest jams, preserves and honey in NSW.

We’ve met a lot of new and interesting people this month – and those we couldn’t meet, we tweeted.

Seeing red: Symbol for marriage equality goes viral — MSNBC

I made my twitter profile image with the HRC’s red logo, then I made the header for this blog carry the logo too – why dont you do the same for this week. Join the Campaign you design activists.

The Human Rights Campaign’s push for marriage equality is sweeping social media Tuesday as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the Proposition 8 case. The social campaign launched around 1 p.m. EST Monday afternoon, when the organization changed its Facebook profile picture from its iconic blue and yellow logo to the current red version.
