There’s something beautiful and romantic about horse-drawn carriages. That’s why so many cities host the carriages, including Melbourne. Codes of practice have outlined rules and practices to protect the carriage horses as much as possible, however these rules may not always be fair for them.
Many times these horses work up to 12 hours in a day, often leaving them exhausted and dehydrated. Others have noted that the horses have to trod on pavement which is unnatural for them and could even do damage to their joints. Some have even witnessed the carriage drivers beating the horses unnecessarily.
While I love the beauty of horse-drawn carriages, I know that changes have to be made in order to protect the horses. Regulations need to be improved so that these animals can continue to be healthy.
