Warped Image

Many people around the world have a very warped vision of themselves. This warped image is causing an estimate of 1 in every 250 people in developed countries to develop anorexia or another eating disorder.

The complex occurs when someone has an extremely distorted body image, refuses to maintain a healthy body weight, and has an irrational fear of gaining weight. Different methods are used to become anorexic, but all lead to an unhealthy life. The desire to be skinny consumes the person and causes the person to be unable to function in normal day-to-day life. To the typical anorexic, skinny is never skinny enough. This problem can be fatal for those who are not provided help as the body will shut down.

There’s no simple cause for anorexia, but instead is a complex combination of many factors. There maybe more pressure for some to look “perfect” like the people in magazines, others use anorexia to deal with other underlying pains, like strained relationships. For some it gives a sense of control in a very overwhelming world. Whatever the cause, anorexia is a very serious problem that affects millions around the world (over 1 million in Australia alone).

Foundations like the Butterfly Foundation encourage people to have a positive and healthy body image. Check out this link to find out more : http://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/vision-mission/
